During 9-11.10.2023 the 23rd<\/sup> conference in the EcoBalt series \u2013 EcoBalt 2023<\/a> \u2013 took place in Tallinn, co-organised by the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics and the University of Tartu (including AKKI). With around 200 participants from 21 countries it was a major Ecology\/Chemistry\/Materials science event in the region.<\/span><\/div>\n

The conference also brought together analytical chemists from many Estonian laboratories, who received useful information from the various sessions of the conference. In addition, it was a good opportunity to share experiences and create connections for future meetings. In addition to renowned researchers, students also had the opportunity to present the results of their research at the conference.<\/p>\n

Within the framework of the conference, a special session “Data quality in environmental analysis” was also held under the leadership of the University of Tartu (including AKKI). The invited speakers of the session were two metrology in chemistry \u201cgurus\u201d Dr. Steve Ellison from LGC and Dr. Bertil Magnusson from Trollboken who also hosted the following discussion session.<\/p>\n

Dr Steve Ellison’s<\/strong> presentation dealt with the application of statistical methods in the analysis of chemical and biological measurement results. He is one of the authors of the EURACHEM Uncertainty Evaluation Guide and participates in the work of several international committees in the fields of chemistry and measurement, e.g. IUPAC, ISO, CEN, and BSI.<\/span><\/div>\n

Dr Bertil Magnusson’s<\/strong>\u00a0the presentation focused on how to estimate limits of quantitation and uncertainties using data collected daily in the laboratory. Dr. Magnusson also has long-term experience in EURACHEM and is the author of several guides, including Nordtest guides that are beneficial to routine laboratories.<\/p>\n

Presentation by Dr. Riin Rebane<\/strong> from the Estonian Environmental Research Center gave an overview of the practical experience of data quality in environmental analysis laboratories, talking about various aspects in the validation of environmental analysis methods, as well as how to interpret environmental data.<\/p>\n
